Apple: The App Store attracts more than 813 million visitors worldwide every week

On the occasion of the opening of the WWDC 2025 developer conference, Apple’s official website issued a press release today to promote the “record” of its own App Store.

Apple announced today that a new study led by Professor Andrey Fradkin, an economist at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, and Dr. Jessica Burley, an economist at Annoxis International Consulting, shows that the global App Store will generate a total of $1.30 trillion in developer turnover and sales in 2024. More than 90% of the turnover and sales generated by the App Store ecosystem are fully owned by developers without paying any commissions to Apple. Apple: App Store Attracts Over 813 million Worldwide Visits Every Week “It’s great to see so many developers designing great apps, building successful businesses, and reaching Apple users around the world,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “This report proves that developers use apps and gaming experiences to enrich people’s lives in so many ways, while creating opportunities and driving innovation. We are proud to support their success.” New research by Professor Fradkin and Dr. Burley shows that developers have more ways to monetize apps on the App Store than ever before. The study found that in 2024, developers of digital goods and services will generate $131 billion in revenue and sales, driven by games, photo and video editing apps and enterprise tools. Sales of physical goods and services exceed $1 trillion, driven by increased demand for online food delivery and pick-up and grocery orders. Revenues from display ads in developers’ apps reached $150 billion. The three categories of consumption – digital goods and services, physical goods and services, and in-app advertising – have more than doubled since 2019. Physical goods and services saw the strongest growth (2.6x), mainly due to a significant increase in food delivery and pick-up and daily necessities consumption. The growth in digital goods and services reflects continued demand for games and increased consumption in apps to support content creation, such as photo and video editing apps. At the same time, in-app advertising has made many apps available to users for free or at low prices. The App Store continues to play the role of a global innovation driver, with AI-driven apps having an increasing impact on users’ daily lives. The App Store’s transaction engine provides developers with a global distribution platform that helps them reach users around the world, attracting more than 813 million visits worldwide each week. The study found that the turnover and sales generated by the App Store ecosystem more than doubled in the United States, China, and Europe over the past five years. Digital goods and services, physical goods and services, and in-app advertising revenue have increased more than sevenfold in the United States since 2019, with the popularity of mobile payments. In China, the e-commerce market has expanded significantly since 2019, and online daily necessities consumption has increased more than fivefold. Spending on food delivery and pick-up has more than quadrupled in Europe, outpacing common categories such as general retail and travel. Travel apps are an important consumer category in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and India. Apple says it has long invested in developing tools and features that make it easier for developers to publish apps and games, be discovered by users around the world, and achieve business success and growth. For example, the App Store’s transaction system supports the use of more than 40 local currencies, provides seamless tax management in nearly 200 regions, and allows developers to set prices, manage subscriptions, and more. Developers also benefit from a range of tools and technologies, including developing and testing apps through Xcode and TestFlight, monitoring and comparing app performance through App Analytics, improving performance through tools such as Product Page Optimization, and promoting apps through a variety of opportunities and resources. At the same time, Apple’s built-in payment system protects users from fraud and abuse; over the past five years, the App Store has blocked more than $9 billion in fraudulent transactions, protecting users. Apple also offers a variety of online and offline programs to help developers improve their apps, including Meet with Apple courses, scheduled events and labs, and 24/7 access to Apple support via phone and email in nine languages. Apple Developer Centers in the US, China, India and Singapore hosted tens of thousands of developers last year. The Developer Centers host events throughout the year to provide a supportive environment for developer teams to improve their apps through more than 250,000 APIs, including frameworks such as HealthKit, Metal, Core ML, MapKit and SwiftUI. Apple Developer Academies in Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States help students build foundational skills in programming, AI, design, and marketing through a suite of free courses designed for future professional developers. In addition, more than 20 Apple Foundation Programs teach students the foundational skills of app development through intensive four-week courses at 18 Apple Developer Academies around the world. At next week’s annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, developers from around the world will be able to participate in more than 100 free technical lectures, following Apple experts to gain an in-depth understanding of the latest technologies and frameworks. Developers can also access guides and documentation to stay up to date on the most important conference announcements, and stay up to date with the latest information through the Apple Developer website, App, and Apple Developer WeChat official account. Apple Developer Program members and Apple Developer Enterprise Program members can also communicate directly with Apple experts through online group labs and one-on-one lab appointments.
