Apple’s App Store ecosystem earned $1.3 trillion in global revenue last year, and ninety percent of it was not commissioned

Recently, Apple released its second commissioned research report on the global ecosystem of the App Store.

According to the report, the total sales and billing of goods and services supported by the global App Store ecosystem will reach a staggering $1.3 trillion in 2024, with 90% of sales not paid to Apple in commissions.

The study, which builds on previous U.S.-based research reports, further demonstrates the profound impact of the App Store on developers and the digital economy on a global scale.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “We’re excited to see so many developers designing great apps, building successful businesses, and reaching people around the world. This report is a testament to how developers can enrich people’s lives through apps and games, while also creating opportunities and driving innovation. We are proud to support their success. ”

According to the report, developers generated $131 billion in sales of digital goods and services, mainly from games and image and video editing apps, such as Adobe.

Sales of physical goods and services facilitated by App Store apps exceeded $1 trillion, making it the strongest growth segment. Spending on digital, physical and in-app advertising has doubled over the past five years, with physical goods seeing the most significant growth, demonstrating a growing reliance on apps for food and lifestyle items.

Currently, an average of more than 813 million users worldwide visit the App Store each week, and Apple’s payment system supports more than 40 local currencies and handles tax transactions in 200 regions.

In addition, with the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference 2025, Apple will also launch more than 100 technology talks to further empower developers.

However, the report comes at a time when Apple is facing pressure from regulators in many countries. In the U.S., Apple has been asked to allow developers to direct users to complete a purchase using a web page;

In Europe, Apple is in a compliance dispute over the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA requires Apple to open up system interoperability and open up Apple’s iOS features to third-party developers, which has led to multiple fines and legal challenges.
